Choosing a play kitchen

Height first: the counter should sit at the child's waist. Then storage, since a kitchen that holds its own pots stays tidy. Then extras: a working faucet pump, turning knobs, an oven door with a window, a chalkboard for menus. The Tiny Land iconic wooden play kitchen and the Kids Wooden Mud Kitchen with two sinks and four stoves are the two we recommend most often.

Pretend play beyond the kitchen

A wooden grocery store with a scanner and shelves, a doctor kit, a dollhouse, a tool bench and a costume box turn a corner of the room into a small world. Pretend play builds language and turn taking, and it is the play that keeps a 3-year-old busy longest without a screen.

Materials

We list kitchens in solid wood or birch plywood with water-based paint, and play food in wood, felt or food-grade silicone. Product pages state the material, the finish and the age rating.

Frequently asked questions

What age is a play kitchen for?

Most toddlers start pretend cooking around 18 months and play hardest between 2 and 5. Pick a kitchen with the counter at about the child's waist height; many wooden models have adjustable legs.

Wooden or plastic play kitchen?

Wood is heavier, quieter, lasts through siblings and looks better in a living room. Plastic is lighter and cheaper, often with lights and sounds. For a Montessori setup, wood with real knobs and a working faucet is the usual choice.

What comes with the kitchen?

It varies. Some include pots, utensils and play food; most do not. Each page lists what is in the box. We sell play food and cookware sets separately so you can match the kitchen.

Can a play kitchen go outdoors?

Mud kitchens are built for it: sealed wood, metal basins and a chalkboard. Indoor kitchens should stay inside. Our Kids Wooden Mud Kitchen with two sinks is the most ordered outdoor model.

How long is assembly?

Plan 45 to 90 minutes for a wooden kitchen with two people. Every kit ships with tools and numbered parts.
