What it really costs over five years
This is the number almost no one shows you, and it is the reason a nine hundred dollar purifier can be cheaper to own than a two hundred dollar one. Most purifiers in the baby aisle want a new filter every three to six months. Austin Air filters are built to last five years under normal residential use, and the unit carries a five year pro-rated filter warranty on top of that. So the honest comparison is not sticker price, it is five year total cost.

Worth knowing before you buy: junior size filters are interchangeable with each other, and standard size filters are interchangeable with each other. If you buy a HealthMate Junior now and your situation changes, at year five you can fit a Junior Plus filter to the machine you already own instead of replacing the unit. Check the label on the bottom of the unit if you are unsure which size you have: HM200 is a junior size filter, HM400 is a standard size filter.
Where to put it in the nursery
These units draw air in through all four sides, so the one thing that genuinely hurts performance is pushing the cabinet flat against a wall or wedging it into a closet or behind the glider. Leave clear space around it. Beyond that, keep it out of reach of the crib rail and off the path you walk in the dark at 3am, and run it continuously rather than switching it on for an hour before bedtime, because the point of a five year filter and a motor rated for continuous use is that the machine is meant to stay on.
One more practical note. If your nursery is being set up right now in a room that has just been painted or has new furniture in it, run the purifier while the room is empty for the days before the baby comes home. Off-gassing is heaviest when everything is newest, which is precisely the window most families skip.

Austin Air does not publish decibel figures for these units, so we are not going to invent one. Independent reviewers generally describe the lowest of the three speeds as quiet enough to sleep through and the highest speed as clearly audible, closer to a box fan. In practice most families run the low or medium setting overnight and the high setting during the day. The motor is rated for continuous use, so running it around the clock is the intended use.
Do I really only replace the filter every five years?
That is what the manufacturer specifies under normal residential use, and it is backed by a five year pro-rated filter warranty. Heavy smoke, construction dust or a wildfire season will shorten it. Compared with the three to six month cartridges most purifiers in the baby aisle use, this is where the price difference gets made back.
Can I upgrade later without buying a new machine?
Yes, within the same size class. All junior size filters are interchangeable with each other and all standard size filters are interchangeable with each other, so a HealthMate Junior can take a Junior Plus filter at replacement time, and a HealthMate can take a HealthMate Plus filter. Junior filters measure 11.5 inches high and standard filters measure 14.5 inches high.
Should I get the version with wheels?
Only if the unit is going to move. Casters make sense on the standard size units, which are 47 pounds, and on a Junior that travels between a nursery and a living room. If the machine is going to sit in one corner of one room, skip them and put the money toward the filter fund.
Does it help with asthma and allergies?
Austin Air states these units lessen night time allergies and asthma attacks and ease coughing, wheezing and sneezing, and the Bedroom Machine specifically was used in Johns Hopkins trials that measured reductions in nitrogen dioxide in homes with gas stoves. What a purifier does is reduce what is in the air. It is not a treatment, and it does not replace anything your pediatrician has you doing.
