Where to start by age

6 to 12 months: a low climbing arch or rocker, a wooden play gym, stacking rings and a soft play mat. 1 to 2 years: a Pikler triangle with a ramp, a busy board, a first play kitchen and a learning tower for the kitchen counter. 2 to 4 years: a larger climbing set with a slide, a balance board, a rotating bookshelf and an activity table. 4 and up: Swedish ladders, wall bars and a floor bed or house bed for the big-kid room.

What we check before listing a piece

Solid wood or birch plywood, not particleboard. Water-based, non-toxic finish. Rounded edges and no exposed screws. A stated weight limit and age range. Makers who build to order and ship within a week. If a product cannot show these on its page, it does not go in this collection.

Montessori furniture

Rotating bookshelves and forward-facing shelves let toddlers pick their own books. Mirrored wardrobes at child height teach dressing. Learning towers bring them to the counter. Floor beds and house beds give a toddler a room they can get in and out of alone. Most of our furniture comes from Orfis Kids and vuvitostore, shipped flat-packed with assembly instructions.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a toy Montessori?

A Montessori toy is simple, made of natural materials, does one thing well and lets the child lead. Wooden climbing sets, learning towers, busy boards, stacking and sorting toys and low shelves that put toys at the child's height all fit the method.

What age is a Pikler triangle for?

Most babies start pulling up on a Pikler triangle between 6 and 12 months and climb it confidently from 12 to 18 months. With a ramp and a rocker arch it stays in use to age 5 or 6. Look for sets rated by weight, usually 130 to 150 lb.

Are Montessori climbing sets safe indoors?

Yes, when the set stands on a rug or play mat with clear space around it, the wood is smooth and finished with a water-based, non-toxic coat, and an adult stays within reach for children under 3. Foldable models lock open with pins; check the locks before each climb.

Learning tower or step stool?

A learning tower has a rail on all four sides, so a toddler can stand at counter height safely while you cook. A step stool is lighter and cheaper but leaves the child unguarded. For ages 18 months to 3 years, the tower is the safer buy.
