Nursery and Kids Room Wall Decor Guide 2026: Wallpaper, Wall Stickers, Decals and Murals

The crib is built. The dresser is in. And then you stand in the doorway, look at that big blank wall, and think: this is the wall my baby is going to stare at every morning.

That is usually the moment the search starts. Nursery wallpaper or wall stickers? A full mural, or a few little decals above the crib? Will it peel the paint? What if we move? We have stood in that doorway too, twice, so this is the guide we wish someone had handed us: every kind of wall decor for a nursery or kids room, explained plainly, with real pieces from our own studio so you can see what each one looks like on a wall.

The short answer

For a whole accent wall, choose a peel and stick wallpaper mural: one continuous scene, printed to your wall size. For a quick, low commitment change, choose a wall decal set: many small pieces you arrange yourself. For one wow moment, a 3D wall sticker looks like a window opening in the wall. Behind a bed, a headboard wall decal turns the bed into the center of the room. All four are self adhesive, need no paste or tools, and come off a smooth, fully cured painted wall without residue.

Wallpaper, wall stickers, decals or a mural: what is the difference?

People use these words loosely, so here is how they work in practice. The real difference is how much of the wall you want to change, and how long it takes to put up.

Type Best for Time to install Ours start at
Wallpaper mural A full accent wall An afternoon $158 (free US shipping)
Wall decal set Above a crib, a shelf, a reading corner Under an hour $33.90
3D wall sticker One focal point About ten minutes $27.50
Headboard decal Behind a toddler, twin or full bed About twenty minutes $42

Nursery wallpaper and kids wallpaper: is a full mural worth it?

If you want the room to feel finished, yes. A mural is one painted scene that runs across the whole wall, so the room has a story instead of a few scattered pictures. Babies love high contrast and faces at first, but by the toddler months that wall becomes a conversation: where is the bunny, what is behind the waterfall, can we go camping.

Today almost all nursery wallpaper for families is peel and stick. Ours is a matte, self adhesive vinyl, about 100 microns thick: no paste, no water, no tools, and you can lift and reposition it while you work. That is why it is the usual answer for renters and for anyone who knows the room will change again when the baby becomes a preschooler.

How it arrives: in vertical panels 39 inches (100 cm) wide, numbered left to right, rolled in a tube and never folded. The height is printed in one piece, so there are no horizontal seams. Panels overlap by about a centimeter along a printed guide. If your wall falls between two sizes, choose the next size up and write your exact measurements in the personalization box; we trim it to your wall for free.

Nursery wall stickers and decal sets: the easiest place to start

If you are not ready to commit to a whole wall, start here. A decal set is a sheet of small pieces, each already cut to its own shape, with no clear square around the artwork. Your own paint color shows between the pieces, so the finished wall looks hand painted rather than stuck on.

The fun part is that you are the designer. Lay the pieces out on the floor first, then decide: scattered across the whole wall, gathered in a soft cloud above the crib, or marching in a row along a shelf. Bigger sheets mean bigger pieces, not more of them, so choose the size by how large you want each piece to read from the doorway.

3D wall stickers: the hole in the wall trick

A 3D wall sticker is one large piece printed to look as if the wall has broken open onto another world: a waterfall, a dinosaur valley, a meadow full of butterflies. Only the broken edge and the scene behind it are printed. The flat wall around it is left clear, so your own wall color continues right up to the crack and the illusion holds on white, sage, blue or blush walls alike.

It is the fastest makeover in this guide. Up to 59 inches wide it arrives as a single sheet already cut to shape: peel, press from the middle outwards, and you are done in about ten minutes.

Headboard wall decals and nursery accent wall ideas

When a child moves into a toddler or twin bed, the wall behind it becomes the natural focal point. A headboard decal is one big arch that rises behind the bed, so you get the look of a painted arch accent wall without tape, primer or a weekend of edging. They are sized to real beds: toddler, twin and full.

How do I measure my wall?

Use a metal tape measure and write everything down in inches or centimeters, whichever you are comfortable with.

  1. Width: measure at the top, middle and bottom, and use the largest number. Older walls are rarely perfectly square.
  2. Height: measure from the floor, or the top of the baseboard, to the ceiling, at both ends of the wall.
  3. Obstacles: note windows, outlets and light switches. You simply cut around them after the panel is up.
  4. Choose the size: for murals, pick the nearest size and go up if you are in between; we trim to your exact wall for free. For decals and 3D stickers, tape a sheet of paper the same size to the wall and look at it from the doorway before you decide.

How to put up peel and stick wallpaper without bubbles

You do not need a professional. You need a clean wall, a free afternoon and, ideally, a second pair of hands for the first panel.

  1. Wipe the wall with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry completely. Dust is the enemy of good adhesion.
  2. Start on the left. Draw a light vertical line with a level for the first panel, because every other panel follows it.
  3. Peel about 12 inches of backing from the top, line the panel up with your mark, and press it on.
  4. Smooth from the middle outwards with a soft card or cloth, pulling the backing down a little at a time. This pushes air to the edges instead of trapping it.
  5. Overlap the next panel along the printed guide line, about a centimeter, and repeat.
  6. Trim the top and bottom with a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. Change blades often; a dull blade tears vinyl.

If a bubble appears, lift that section gently and smooth it again. The adhesive is repositionable while you work, so mistakes are not permanent.

Will it damage the paint? Renters, textured walls and fresh paint

On a smooth, fully cured painted wall, our wallpaper, decals and 3D stickers come off cleanly with no residue. Peel slowly, low and close to the wall rather than pulling straight out. Two situations are worth knowing about before you order:

Freshly painted walls. Paint feels dry in hours but takes a few weeks to cure fully. If you are painting the nursery, paint first, set up the furniture, and put the wallpaper up last.

Textured walls. Self adhesive vinyl needs a smooth surface to grip. On heavy orange peel or knockdown texture it will not hold well, so choose a smoother wall or a smaller decal set instead of a full mural.

Keeping wall decor safe in the nursery

Wall decals and wallpaper are one of the safest ways to decorate above a crib, simply because there is nothing heavy that can fall. A few habits keep it that way:

  • Keep small decal pieces out of reach of the crib once your baby can pull to stand. Little fingers love a lifted corner.
  • Press every edge down firmly, and check the corners near the crib now and then.
  • Avoid shelves and framed art directly above the crib; let the wall itself be the art.
  • Air the room for a day after installing, as you would after any new decor.

Nursery, toddler room, playroom or bathroom?

Nursery: keep it soft. One accent wall of wallpaper behind the crib, or a decal set framing it, and leave the other walls plain so the room stays restful. Toddler and kids rooms: this is where a headboard decal or a 3D sticker shines, because the child is old enough to love it and talk about it. Playroom wallpaper: go bolder and busier; a playroom can take more color than a sleep space. Kids bathroom: vinyl wipes clean, but keep it away from direct shower steam, so a powder room or the wall opposite the tub works better than inside the shower area.

Frequently asked questions

Is peel and stick wallpaper safe for a nursery?

Yes, when it is used sensibly. Our peel and stick wallpaper and wall stickers are thin self adhesive vinyl with nothing heavy that could fall. Keep small decal pieces out of reach of the crib, smooth every edge flat, and air the room for a day after installing, as you would with any new decor.

Will wall stickers or peel and stick wallpaper damage the paint?

On a smooth, fully cured painted wall they come off cleanly with no residue. Peel slowly at a low angle. They are not made for textured walls or for paint that has not cured, which is when paint is most likely to lift.

What is the difference between wall stickers and wall decals?

In most shops the words mean the same thing: a printed self adhesive design you peel off a backing and press onto the wall. We use decal set for many small pieces you arrange yourself and 3D wall sticker for one large illusion piece.

How much wallpaper do I need for a nursery accent wall?

Measure the width and height of the wall and pick the nearest mural size, going one size up if you are in between. Our murals arrive as numbered panels 39 inches (100 cm) wide, so a 118 inch wall is three panels, and we trim to your exact measurements for free.

Can renters use peel and stick wallpaper?

Yes, this is the main reason many families choose it. It needs no paste or water, can be repositioned while you work, and lifts off a smooth cured wall when you move out.

How long does peel and stick wallpaper last in a kids room?

Years, if it is on a smooth wall away from direct steam and sun. The matte or satin vinyl wipes clean with a soft damp cloth, which matters a lot once crayons appear.

What wall decor is best above a crib?

Light, flat decor such as wall decals or a wallpaper mural. Many parents avoid framed art and shelves directly above the crib so nothing can fall, and keep loose decal pieces beyond a standing baby's reach.

Should I order a sample first?

If color matters to you, yes. Our wallpaper murals have a sample option printed on the real material, so you can hold it against your wall in your own light before ordering the full size.

Whatever you choose, the wall does not need to be perfect. It only needs to feel like your family. Ours have crayon marks on them now, and honestly we like them better that way.
