Cloth diapering can save your family well over a thousand dollars per baby and keeps thousands of disposables out of landfills. The catch? The lingo. All-in-ones, pockets, prefolds, covers... it sounds complicated, but it comes down to picking the system that fits your routine. Every option here is one we'd use on our own babies.

The main systems, in plain English

  • All-in-one (AIO): The absorbent layers are sewn into a waterproof shell. One piece, no stuffing, goes on like a disposable. Easiest for beginners, babysitters, and daycare.
  • Pocket: A waterproof shell with a pocket you stuff with absorbent inserts. Dries faster than AIOs and lets you adjust absorbency for naps and nighttime.
  • Prefolds and covers: The classic, budget-friendly workhorse. A cotton prefold folded into a waterproof cover; you only replace the prefold at most changes, so covers get reused through the day.
  • Fitteds and wool: Maximum absorbency for heavy wetters and overnight. Fitted diapers are absorbent all the way around, and a natural wool cover on top is breathable and surprisingly low-maintenance.

How many do you need?

For full-time cloth, plan on 24 to 36 diapers so you can wash every 2 to 3 days without running out. Newborn sizes fit best in the early weeks, while one-size diapers adjust with snaps and typically fit from about 8 to 35 pounds. Extra inserts and boosters are cheap insurance for overnights.

One thing to know: regular diaper creams can coat cloth fibers and hurt absorbency, so use a cloth-safe cream (we've written a whole guide on this below). Orders over $100 ship free in the US.

Can I use regular diaper cream with cloth diapers?

Most conventional creams contain petroleum or thick zinc pastes that coat the fabric and cause repelling, which means leaks. Use a cloth-safe cream, or place a disposable liner between the cream and the diaper when you need heavy-duty rash treatment.

Do cloth diapers really save money?

Yes. Disposables run roughly $2,000 to $3,000 per child from birth to potty training, while a complete cloth stash typically costs $300 to $800 and can be reused for a second baby. The savings grow with every kid.
