Cloth Diapers
Cloth diapers 101: how to pick your system
Cloth diapering can save your family well over a thousand dollars per baby and keeps thousands of disposables out of landfills. The catch? The lingo. All-in-ones, pockets, prefolds, covers... it sounds complicated, but it comes down to picking the system that fits your routine. Every option here is one we'd use on our own babies.
More about this collection
The main systems, in plain English
- All-in-one (AIO): The absorbent layers are sewn into a waterproof shell. One piece, no stuffing, goes on like a disposable. Easiest for beginners, babysitters, and daycare.
- Pocket: A waterproof shell with a pocket you stuff with absorbent inserts. Dries faster than AIOs and lets you adjust absorbency for naps and nighttime.
- Prefolds and covers: The classic, budget-friendly workhorse. A cotton prefold folded into a waterproof cover; you only replace the prefold at most changes, so covers get reused through the day.
- Fitteds and wool: Maximum absorbency for heavy wetters and overnight. Fitted diapers are absorbent all the way around, and a natural wool cover on top is breathable and surprisingly low-maintenance.
How many do you need?
For full-time cloth, plan on 24 to 36 diapers so you can wash every 2 to 3 days without running out. Newborn sizes fit best in the early weeks, while one-size diapers adjust with snaps and typically fit from about 8 to 35 pounds. Extra inserts and boosters are cheap insurance for overnights.
One thing to know: regular diaper creams can coat cloth fibers and hurt absorbency, so use a cloth-safe cream (we've written a whole guide on this below). Orders over $100 ship free in the US.
Frequently asked questions
How many cloth diapers do I need to get started?
For full-time cloth diapering, 24 to 36 diapers lets you wash every 2 to 3 days comfortably. If you're starting part-time or just trying it out, 10 to 12 is enough to learn what you like before committing to a full stash.
What's the difference between all-in-one and pocket diapers?
An all-in-one has the absorbent layers sewn in, so it's a single piece with zero assembly, the closest thing to a disposable. A pocket diaper has a shell you stuff with inserts, which means more prep but faster drying and adjustable absorbency.
How do I wash cloth diapers?
Knock solids into the toilet, run a cold rinse, then a hot wash with a full dose of detergent, and dry on low or hang. Skip fabric softener and bleach; both damage the fibers and waterproof layers. Every 2 to 3 days is the sweet spot for wash routines.
Can I use regular diaper cream with cloth diapers?
Most conventional creams contain petroleum or thick zinc pastes that coat the fabric and cause repelling, which means leaks. Use a cloth-safe cream, or place a disposable liner between the cream and the diaper when you need heavy-duty rash treatment.
Do cloth diapers really save money?
Yes. Disposables run roughly $2,000 to $3,000 per child from birth to potty training, while a complete cloth stash typically costs $300 to $800 and can be reused for a second baby. The savings grow with every kid.
How to Choose Cloth Diapers for Your Baby
Cloth diapering can feel like a lot at first, and we get it, because we are moms too. The good news is that once you find your rhythm, it beces second nature and gentle on both your baby's skin and your budget. Our Cloth Diapers collection brings together all-in-ones, pockets, prefolds, and covers in soft natural fabrics, so you can start small and build a stash that actually works for your daily routine.
Start by thinking about your baby's age, how often you want to wash, and how hands-on you like your changes to be. All-in-ones are wonderfully simple, pockets let you customize absorbency, and prefolds with covers stretch your dollar the furthest. We curated newborn sizes, adjustable snaps, and cozy bamboo and hemp options so every family, from the first tiny diaper to potty training, can find a fit that feels right.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cloth diapers do I need to start?
Most families do well with around 24 to 36 diapers if you wash every two to three days. Newborns go through more, so lean higher at the start. Building your stash gradually is completely fine, and mixing styles helps you learn what your baby likes best.
What is the difference between all-in-one and pocket cloth diapers?
All-in-ones have the absorbent layers sewn in, so they work like a disposable and are super simple. Pocket diapers have a sleeve you stuff with inserts, letting you adjust absorbency for naps or nighttime. Both are great, so it really comes down to your washing and change-time preferences.
Are cloth diapers good for newborns?
Yes, and newborn-specific styles fit those tiny bodies far better than one-size diapers early on. Look for snug legs, a low front to protect the cord area, and soft natural fabrics. Newborn all-in-ones and covers with prefolds are both gentle, easy options for the first weeks.
How do you wash cloth diapers?
Do a cold rinse first, then a warm or hot wash with a full amount of detergent, followed by an extra rinse. Air drying covers and tumble drying inserts on low works well. Skip fabric softeners and bleach, since they can affect absorbency and irritate delicate skin.

Cloth Diapers for Every Stage and Style
Our Cloth Diapers collection covers the whole reusable journey, from newborn all-in-ones to adjustable pocket diapers, natural cotton prefolds, and breathable wool and hook and loop covers. With 129 products, you can mix and match by fabric, fit, and absorbency to suit your baby and your laundry routine. We chose soft, skin-friendly materials like bamboo velour and hemp cotton because comfort against delicate skin matters just as much as leak protection and easy daily use.
Choosing the Right Diaper by Age and Absorbency
For those first weeks, newborn all-in-ones and small covers with prefolds give the snug fit tiny bodies need. As your baby grows, one-size pockets with snap adjustments follow along and let you add inserts for heavy wetters and overnight stretches. Hemp and bamboo inserts hold more without bulk, which is a lifesaver for nap time and sleep. When toddlers start moving toward potty training, trimmer slim-fit pockets keep changes quick and comfortable during busy, active days.
Building a Stash and Gifting Cloth Diapers
If you are shopping for a baby shower or registry, cloth diapers make a thoughtful, lasting gift that new parents genuinely use for months. A starter bundle of a few all-in-ones, a couple of covers, and extra inserts is a friendly way to help someone begin without overwhelm. For your own stash, we suggest trying two or three styles first, then reordering the favorites. Natural fabrics and adjustable fits mean these diapers grow right alongside baby.
Start your cloth diapering journey with confidence, and remember orders over $100 ship free in the US.
